Three Things I WILL DO to Improve my Library Program

GET STUDENTS IN THE LIBRARY

ACTIVE

·   Do research with 2d graders.

·   Encourage small groups to come in for research.

·   Educate students on the research process for their required papers.

·   Challenge  students in Grades 1-5 to set a goal to "pump up" their reading during this last nine weeks

·   Plan an evening / month for community to come to Library for reading, check out.

·   Start a weekly family Library night.

·   Have lunch bunch w/ students.

·   Try to work with G/T kids & make sure they have what they need.

·   Attract other curricular areas other than Language Arts.

·   Open the [Library] to students in the morning before school.

·  Have open door policy before, after school and during lunch.

·   Look at avenues other than student passes at lunch which [lack of] causes genuine students to be turned away.

PASSIVE

·   Continue to update facilities & collection to make the library more inviting!

·   Make the students' experience in the library pleasant with greetings, comfy chairs, plants, etc.

·   Add books to collection that will appeal to students – example: Graphic novels.

·   Add Graphic novels & subscribe to comic books to try & get more kids in.

·   Place art on walls to make it a comfy, inviting, safe place.

·   Display new books & have a seasonal display in the display case.

 

INCREASE USE OF TECHNOLOGY

·   Get on the faculty meeting agenda for Digital Curriculum and Library Resources Page.

·   Lead/teach skills at faculty meetings to help [teachers know] all the library has to offer.

·   Integrate technology with ALL lessons.

·   Integrate technology into my lessons with all grade levels.

·   Integrate technology in all (or most!) of my lessons.

·   Integrate technology more into my lessons.

·   Incorporate technology.

·   Incorporate more integration of technology in lessons.

·   Incorporate more technology into my library lessons.

·   Incorporate technology into my library lessons...using PowerPoint, Digital Curriculum, as well as other Library Resources Page sites, Region IV films, CDs,  the wireless laptop computer lab, Inspiration, and web quests.

·   Increase the use of technology by making my library skills lessons to the classes focus on the Library Resources Page and especially Pinpoint, ABC-CLIO, World Book Online...

·   Maximize integration of technology into library lessons...borrowing computers so I can set up demonstration area...

·   Work more on integrating technology & encourage my teachers to allow me to help them.

·   Utilize some dynamite technology lessons.

·   Add more technology to lessons in lower grades.

·   Use laptops & projector more often for lessons.

·   Hang a screen  in reading area so I can utilize laptop, projector more easily

·   Get a computer hook up for mini-lessons to increase use of technology.

·   Check out a projector & laptop to have at my teaching area so that some sort of technology is done at every lesson.

·   Rearrange story area to have access to computer/TV set up to show sites, links, etc. that pertain to presentations.

·   Now that my projector works again, I will use and demonstrate more technology in my lessons.

·   Use laptops for technology integration.

·   Use mobile lab to emphasize & review databases on Library Resources PageP that will be most helpful to each grades 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th in their spring research.

·   Use mobile computers to teach Library Resources Page.

·   Educate teachers, students & parents about benefits of Library Resources Page.

·   More trivia contests that involve using the Library Resources [Page.]

·   Use Digital Curriculum frequently.

·   Introduce Digital Curriculum to all teachers and students.

·   Demonstrate websites to teachers individually, if needed.

·   Find out if the LCD projector in the computer lab is the only one on campus & how to schedule time to use it in the Library.

·   Become more familiar with new databases.

·   Take more [technology] classes at ITTC.

·   Try to do a better job of teaching the kids to use the OPAC rather than showing them where the book is on the shelf.

·   Open Library computers  to class groups. 

·   Open Library computers up to classes – previously classes were discouraged from using these computers.

·   Schedule more lab times with classes and teacher training during block times.

·   Go to the teachers face-to-face and assist in the labs.

·   Get the web page going.

·   Work on the library page.

·   Update web page.

·   Redesign the web page to include more book award and genre lists, student reviews, research handout, etc.

 

INCREASE INTEGRATION OF TEKS/TAKS PREPARATION

·   Focus more on TEKS as I plan lessons & communicate that with teachers.

·   Double check that all lessons are correlated with TEKS for each particular grade level.

·   Find out from teachers (team leaders) what TEKS, curriculum is being taught for the month.

·   Discuss w/Math, LA Coach, & Principal statistics on how many students entered Library & what TEKS were covered.

·   Work with my literacy coach as much as I do with my math coach.

·   Add TEKS/TAKS to lesson plans.

·   Document how the library supports teacher's curriculum and TEKS teaching in classroom with monthly reports

·   Meet with teachers at each grade level to see how to integrate TEKS more.

·   Align my program as much as possible with classroom instruction of TEKS.

·   Increase TEKS/TAKS integration by meeting and discussing with ALL teachers what their classes are studying...print the numbers at the top of the worksheet.

·   Work with teachers & do a technology lesson – besides regular Library lesson – that will support TAKS.

·   Integrate technology with TEKS– feature Digital Curriculum or other new strategies.

·   Continue to familiarize myself with TEKS & incorporate into class times taking care to address them with teachers.

·   Attend weekly team leader meetings to understand objectives in classroom more clearly, ...discuss TEKS lesson plans with them...

 

COMMUNICATE WITH PRINCIPAL

·   Communicate more with my principal.

·   More consistently & formally communicate with my principal.

·   Continue to have an open door relationship with principal.

·   Meet with principal and discuss with her perceptions about Library – and what I plan to do to increase Library usage.

·   Dialogue w/ the principal (more) to advocate the Library & …address school wide issues & concerns (like improving student technology skills & more use of the Library).

·   Communicate TEKS being taught in Library to principals/teachers.

·   Meet with principal regarding budget.

 

COMMUNICATE WITH TEACHERS, OTHER POWERBROKERS

·   Listen “better” to how I can help the teachers be successful and have a better school day.

·   Talk about what is going on in the Library.

·   Press to get Macs working for AR & Library Resources Page. [Work to eliminate a barrier to student success]

·   Email positive Library happenings to all staff and faculty regularly.

·   Ask my literacy coach: “What can we do together to get more kids in my Library?”

·   Attend department meetings, etc.

·   Attend team planning meetings,

·   Have more collaboration with teachers. Invite self to more meetings, plannings, etc. if not invited.

·   Be more diligent about having "planned" planning sessions with grade levels to show them LRP, especially with grades K, 1, 2.

·   Play an active role to establish positive PR for myself & Library thru reports & informal discussions of what I have done to assist teachers / students meet their curricular needs.

·   Advertise my activities – broadcast widely!!  Promote!

·   Collaborate more with teachers.

·   Collaborate specifically with Lang. Arts and Soc. Studies teachers and with other faculty members when opportunity arises to demonstrate the databases, explain library policies, and research procedures.

·   Work closely with teachers.

·   Work in conjunction with teachers to instruct individuals and small groups to research topics currently being taught in the classroom.

·   Work with team leaders to correlate lesson plans.

·   Continue w/making connections w/teachers.

·   Meet with teachers informally to encourage and educate them about research in the library.

·   Meet with grade level teachers to discuss objectives being taught so library lessons can be coordinated with theirs.

·   Visit classrooms and make myself accessible to teachers as lesson in the classroom.

·   Go visit classrooms. Learn more about the campus & determine how to support the teachers & students.

 

REPORTS (COMMUNICATION PREPAREDNESS!)

·   Collect documentation to support my involvement w/grade level planning & collaboration in order to get off the block schedule!

·   Collect data for monthly report and send in circulation reports monthly.

·   Actually do monthly / 9-week report.

·   Be more diligent about compiling monthly reports for my principal. 

 

OTHER (not as dynamic)

·   Continue to solicit money and gift books to supplement the budget.

·   Update & increase my collection (comments from teachers, principals, etc. regarding age of collection)

·   Find ways to ease shelving burden (4th & 5th graders before school…) so I have time...

·   Be included each morning on announcements!

·   Work with language arts classes / teachers to make sure they bring classes when scheduled. 

·   Have a book fair for the summer reading program.

·   Make another POWER CARD push for summer reading at the public library.

 

INSTEAD 

·   Ask teachers to not allow fines to stop them from bringing classes to Library.

I will stop charging fines since they end up being a barrier to student access.
