ROBERT
BECK
Robert Beck is the Librarian for Landrum Middle School in the
Spring Branch Independent School District.
Mr. Beck received his Master’s of Library Science in 2003 from
Sam Houston State University. He
also received his Master of Music degree in double bass performance in
1992 from Rice University with a full tuition scholarship and was the
first bass player in the history of Rice University to be accepted into
the Doctor of Musical Arts program.
Mr. Beck received the 1983 Richard C. Church Award for
“Outstanding String Student in Music Education” from the prestigious
University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Music. While teaching in the McAllen Independent School District,
Mr. Beck’s Lincoln Junior High Orchestra placed second in the Texas
State Orchestra Championship for the 1987 - 1988 school year.
Mr. Beck’s bass students consistently won principal positions
in both junior high and high school region orchestras and has placed
numerous Texas All-State bass players, two of which were Principal
Bassists of the Texas All-State Symphony Orchestra in his tenure at
McAllen. During his tenure
with the Conroe Independent School District, Mr. Beck started a new
orchestra program in 1993 and brought statewide recognition to
McCullough Junior High School by placing fifth in 1998 and third in 1999
in the State of Texas for the state orchestra championship from the
Texas Music Educators Association.
The Woodlands High School Orchestra, under the direction of Mr.
Beck, placed eighth in the 2000 Texas State Orchestra Championship.
TWHS Orchestra was also honored in the year 2000 as one of the
few groups from Texas to perform for the 2000 millennium celebration at
Disney World. Mr. Beck has
performed 7 solo recitals and has performed as a double bass soloist for
the South Texas Chamber Orchestra and with the Woodlands Symphony
Orchestra. Mr. Beck has
been a member of orchestras in Galveston, Corpus Christi, Edinburg,
Madison and Dubuque. He
currently performs with the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra in
Bryan/College Station and he is the Principal Bassist for the Symphony
of Southeast Texas in Beaumont (www.sost.org).
Mr. Beck has been selected to be a member of Who’s
Who Among Americas Teachers—2000, 2002 &
2005. Mr. Beck studied with
Paul Ellison & David Malone of the Houston Symphony, Richard
Davis-The University of Wisconsin-Madison, Peter Dominguez-Oberlin
Conservatory and Stephen Lester of the Chicago Symphony.
Robert and his wife Rosie live in Spring, Texas with their sons
John and Michael.
