The Texas Bluebonnet books are some of the most distinguished books in the country. The program began in 1981 to "encourage Texas children to read more books, to explore a variety of current books, to develop powers of discrimination, and to identify their favorite books through the voting process." To be eligible to vote, students must be in grades 3-6 and read, or hear read aloud, a minimum of 5 books. Voting for their favorite book is done in January.
