Come follow the trail!

Introduction

Long before you were born, there were people roaming Texas. They built homes, found/grew food, made clothing, and did a wide variety of other things. Can you find the “signs” that will lead you to understand more about their lives in early Texas. Along the way you will meet people from several different tribes, explorers, settlers, priests, and other adventurers.

Task

Your job, as a junior archeologist, is to dig out all of the information needed to develop a  clear picture of your tribe.  Along with your team, you will be assigned a tribe.  You will   divide the responsibilities among your team members to find information on all aspects of  food, homes, tribal government, clothes, where in Texas they lived, and what type of things they did everyday.  You will be the expert on your tribe.  Together with your team you  will need to decide how best to share your information with other people investigating the Native Americans of Texas.  If you need ideas for products, please look at the process section of your task directives.  Also, you may ask you teacher for ideas and assistance.

You will be assigned one of the following Native American tribes:  Caddo, Karankawa, Coahuiltecan, Comanche/Apache, Tonkawa, or Jumano.

You also have two tasks that everyone must complete.  Don't worry, these should be fun.

1)  Follow the following directions to make a mat - much the way the Native American would do.

http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/edu/indian/isplash.htm

2)  Make a clay plaque.

http://www.texancultures.utsa.edu/nativeamerican/texas_native_americans/htms/NativeAmericanArtsAndCraftspg.htm

Process

As you work through this task you need to remember to do several things.  First, you need to define your task.  This means that you need to decide what type of information you need to find.  As a group talk about what information each person will be looking for.  Brainstorm together a list of things to look for under each area listed above.  Write down the lists.  Each of you copy the items that you are looking for.  This will give you a checklist to keep track of what you have found and what information you still need to look for.

Next, you need to look through the websites listed below, to decide which ones might be the most help.  You can also use your path finder to find books, or other search terms to use when searching the web, that also might be of assistance.

After that, begin to collect your information.  Archeologists must learn to decide what information is important and what is trash.  Gather your information and then begin to sort it.  Get rid of the trash but keep your treasures.  Read through all of your material, takes notes, and then begin to organize your material.

Finally, plan the way that you want to present your information.  Be sure that you include  a map that shows the area you tribe settled or roamed.  A few ideas are:  a game, a play, a diorama, a book, a living history museum/oral presentation, a power point presentation, or even an interview.  Work together as a team to make a plan.

After you are finished, you will evaluate your work together.  As you work, think about how your team is working with each other.
