Professional Development |
| Shadow Oaks
Librarian Linda Alexander traveled to Mexico City to facilitate a
workshop on the Big6 research model to Librarians, Technologists, and
Administrators from the American private schools system in Mexico. She led
the group in the understanding the integration of Big6 with technology and
learning in the digital age. Linda has spent 13 years in librarianship and
education, the last 4 at Shadow Oaks. |
| Aban
Rustomji, librarian at Spring Woods High School, recently returned
from Pakistan where she facilitated an education project at the invitation
of the International Reading Association (IRA) to aid refugees and other
displaced persons. Along with 2 volunteers from Australia
& Qatar, a technical advisor from Canada, & 30 educators from
local universities & teacher training colleges, Aban collaboratively
mapped out the framework of a program to develop & train master/mentor
teachers. The group hopes to have 5000 primary grade teachers trained
within the next 3 years to combat the problems associated with illiteracy
& lack of formal schooling. She looks forward to continuing with this
work this summer. Aban has spent 24 years at SWHS & a previous10 years
working in libraries at Loyola & overseas. |

Professional Development |
| Many SBISD
Librarians will be traveling to San Antonio during the week of March
15-20, 2004, to attend the annual Texas Library Association Conference
where they will have dozens of programs on librarianship, reading
motivation, research strategies, and technology integration and hundreds
of vendors from which to choose in their quest for new skills and
information. It is the second largest library conference in the United
States. Two members of the department will be making
presentations at the conference. Dr. Barry Bishop, Administrator
for Library Information Services, will conduct a session on school library
advocacy. Liz Philippi, the department's Systems Administrator,
will participate in a group presentation about how to search library
catalogs for TEKS-supported materials to use with students in preparation
for the various TAKS tests. |
