Collaboration Continuum

Home ] Up ]

As research shows, Librarians, in order to provide a successful program that increases student achievement, need to collaborate with several groups.

Librarians need to be a part of the:

Literacy Team
Technology Team
Leadership Team

In addition, Librarians need to collaborate with each teacher to integrate the Library into the teachers' lessons, the TEKS into the Librarians' lessons, and technology into both.

The Collaboration Continuum:

0 = Zero Collaboration:

The Librarian functions in the Library isolated from what goes on in the campus. The skills are determined and taught by the Librarian with little regard for what the teachers teach.

1 = One way Collaboration

The Librarian observes the curriculum and class activities and plans lessons that parallel what is going on in the classroom. These observations can be informal (i.e. listening at lunch time) or formal (i.e. attending staff development about the curriculum).

2 = Two way Collaboration

The Librarian observes the curriculum, prepares lessons that parallel the curriculum, and then informally tells the teachers what the Librarian will be presenting.

4 = Two way Communication and Collaboration

The Teacher tells the Librarian what is going on in the classroom and requests specifics. The Librarian plans materials and instruction on the request, informs the teacher, and then delivers.

8 = Planning and Collaboration

The Teacher and Librarian plan the lesson based on the curriculum and what uniqueness is gained by instruction through the Library. The instruction is delivered by the Teacher and the Librarian.

12 = Development of Curriculum and Collaboration

The Librarian is involved from the beginning of the curriculum design to offer knowledge of resources available or to attain needed materials to insure a successful experience for all. Librarian also helps in the delivery.
