Inaugural Meeting Summary

The inaugural meeting of the Friends of the Spring Branch School Library was held Wednesday, March 15, 2006 from 9:30 AM until 11:00 AM at the Memorial Middle School Library. In attendance from the district were Liz Philippi (Library Systems Administrator), Vaughn Branom (Library Information Specialist), Barry Bishop (Director for Library Information Services), and Cece Thompson (Executive Director for the Spring Branch Education Foundation). Attending from the community were Linda Brenneke, Ann Tidwell, Elaine Whitman, and Pamela Wike . Also attending were 3 retired School Librarians (Lucy Clampit, Linda House, and Sherry Johnston) and a Houston Public Librarian Rose Trevino.

After introductions we reviewed mission statements from the national organization for Friends Groups and the state organization for School Friends Groups. we tentatively decided that our mission would simply be to support Spring Branch School Libraries. The mission may take on more detail as we move forward.

We briefly went over research that shows that good School Libraries equal higher student achievement. We discussed the State of Libraries in Spring Branch, which is good considering the many cuts that have befallen the department over the last 10 years.

We selected officers to serve through June 2007. A new officer slate will be presented in May of 2007 to start work July 2007.

We decided that one of our first tasks would be to start working on getting articles into all the local newspapers. Librarians will be encouraged to submit 2 paragraphs and a picture of some of the wonderful things they are doing with students. The Friends Group will take the articles and process them through the newspaper procedures so as to keep a steady stream of Spring Branch Library articles in front of our community. This will begin building the awareness of what value the Spring Branch School Libraries add to our students' education and life experience.

The next meeting will be Wednesday, April 19, 2006, from 9:30 AM until 11:00 AM at the Media Center (map)
