Spring Branch ISD Guidelines for InterLibrary Loan! Statements from the State of Texas about InterLibrary Loan: Definition: Interlibrary loan is the process by which a library requests materials from or supplies materials to another library. Purpose: The purpose of interlibrary loan ... is to obtain, upon request of a library user, materials not available in the user's local library. Resource sharing and interlibrary loan service is essential to the vitality of school library media centers of all types and sizes as a means of greatly expanding the range of materials available to users. Lending between school library media centers is in the school's best interest and should be encouraged. Interlibrary loan should serve as an adjunct, not a substitute for collection development. Any materials, regardless of format, may be requested from another library. The supplying library determines whether the materials can be provided. ...borrowing library media centers will not ordinarily request: Spring Branch Etiquette: 1. First preference: Search and send e-mails to specific campuses instead of blanket e-mal especially if book only owned by few Libraries. Blanket e-mails are good for needing multiple copies for something owned by many. It is good to respond to all with number you are sending so that others know when request is filled. 2. Second preference: Put in the subject heading ILL Elementary or Secondary so that other grade levels may delete quickly. Do this anyway. 3. Include call number of the item at the lending Library (to facilitate the Librarian finding the material faster) 4. Include the requesting Library school number so it is easier for the lending Library to loan to the requesting Library (to facilitate the checking out to the requesting Library). 5. May request from Pre-K Centers but do not be surprised if they say no, because they have so few books. 6. When doing the ILL (in JWalk) put in a return date for example one month. If not, you will never know it is loaned. 7. When the ILL book comes, be sure to check it out to the student or teacher so that you can track it. |
