Lesson Plan:                                Family Feud

Objective:  The student will be able to distinguish between the various genres while playing the Family Feud game.

Materials:

  • Questions generated by the librarian
  • 2 bells, like hotel bells
  • small table or cart to put bells on

Procedure/Instruction:

  • Make poster and review these genres: fiction, poetry, myths, fables, tall talks, folk tales, plays, informational books, biographies, autobiographies
  • Appoint scorekeeper. This can be the classroom teacher or student..
  • Divide class into 2 teams; team chooses name
  • Each team sends 1 person to table.
  • Librarian reads a question.
  • The first student to ring the bell must answer correctly. If too much time is taken or the answer is wrong, the other student gets an opportunity. Scorekeeper keeps track on board.
  • The last question is worth 20 points. This gives a new opportunity for either team to win.

Closure/Evaluation:

A bookmark is given to each student for a job well done.

Comments:  Sample questions: In which type of book would you find characters who are larger than life? In which type of book might you find an index? What book would someone write about him/herself?

This game can also be used when teaching indexes. Make a transparency of an index page, and ask students on which page a topic is found.
