Genre Venn Diagram

Objective: The student will compare and contrast two types of genre.

Materials: Paper and books of the various genres being compared.

Procedure/Instruction:

Make Venn Diagram labeled with the two types of genre being compared.

· Fill in the Venn Diagram with characteristics of the genre. Those that overlap go into the circle part that overlaps.

· Fill in the entire Venn Diagram with ideas from students.

Closure/Evaluation: Discuss the two genres and their characteristics. Talk about specific titles within each genre.

Comments: This lesson can be done as an introduction to a new type of genre, or as a conclusion lesson after reading from various forms. This could be done in small groups or whole groups. The Venn Diagram can be done for many different lessons where two things need to be compared.
