Keyboard Mapping

Home ] Up ]

Here are some guidelines for Keyboard mappings on the new PC's and Macs that students may be using to access the Library Management System:

On the PC's

Left control should = Reset

Right control should = Field exit

Enter on the main keyboard = Enter

Enter on the keypad = Enter

+ on the numberpad = Field exit

On the Mac's

Clear = Reset

Return = Enter

Enter = Enter

+ = Field exit

Page up = Roll down

Page down = Roll up

I think we should adopt them as our standard keyboard mapping for the Library system. Before we start, you would need to make sure that Foolproof, or anything that keeps you from saving to the machine's hard drive is disabled, because we want to save the settings.

On the Mac's Dee Durgan could walk you through the process, Or you could submit it to your Tech Spec.

The following are instructions to remap a PC keyboard. jk
These instructions are for anyone who is doing cataloging on a PC, and the keys that should be brackets don’t work like brackets.
First, what does your AS400 screen look like? Do you have the title bar across the top, or does it look like the screen does on a terminal? If it looks like the terminal screen, start at the beginning with step #1. If you have a title bar across the top, you may skip Step #1 and begin with Step #2.
1. Hold down the ALT key and press the {space bar} at the same time. (You might try just pressing the ALT key; mine works that way, but some don’t.) You should get a dialog box with several choices: You want the one that says "Pop-up Menu". When you put your cursor on that, you get another menu with quite a few choices; click on the one that says "Appearance"; when you put the cursor on that, you get another menu. This time you want the one that says "Window Set-up." When you click on that, you get a large box. In the upper left corner is an area that says "Maximized Style," and you want to click in the circle next to the statement that says "With Title-Bar;" then click "OK " at the bottom. Your screen will change so that there is a Title-Bar across the top with words above the buttons.
2. Once you have the Title-Bar, go to the word "Assist" above the buttons. When you click that, you get a drop-down menu; click on "Keyboard Setup." This opens a dialog box; find the "Customize" button at the bottom and click on it. Then you get your keyboard setup screen.
3. Click on the "key" next to the letter "P" (on your keyboard it has a left bracket on it). In the lower left corner of your screen (under "Character", which is under "Select a Key-Action") scroll (sideways) until you find the left bracket. (It is at the end of the upper case letters.) Click on it so that it is highlighted.
4. In the area to the right, under "Change Current Action for Selected Key," click the square by itself to the left of the vertical line of squares. Then click the top arrow-key that points to "base". When you do that, you should see the character change in the white space to the right. Then go to "File" (at the top) and click on "Save."
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 to change the other key (between the one you just changed and the backward slash). The right bracket, of course, is next to the left bracket under "Character."

Don’t forget to "save"; but if you do forget, you will be prompted to "save."

6. When you have changed both keys, click on the "X" in the upper right corner, then on the "X" in the upper right corner of the next box. Now, your keys should display both brackets when you press them.
