Lesson Design

Focus: One goal for SBISD Librarians is to incorporate technology into each lesson. Creating web pages to better support instruction and learning is one way to accomplish this goal.
Objective: First, to cover what should be on a Library web page. Second to show how to start and add a Library web page including tables.
Purpose: To be able to support students and staff as they do projects and use the Library.
Input: Divide the group in two.
1. Have one group search resources below to determine what should be on EVERY Library web page.
2. Have the other group search the resources below to determine what should be on the Library Home Page.

From the lists created by the groups change this page as a demonstration of changing web pages.

Next go over several essential skills needed to be comfortable with FrontPage:

Navigating around your web site
Banner
Heading
Navigation in the heading automatically
Table management
Linking to other sites
Shared Borders (top and bottom)

Model: Demonstrate the creation of a web page with all the components
Check understanding: Ask what the essential components of creating the Library web page are.
Practice: Let them create.
Closure: Let them show what they learned.

RESOURCES

Things to think about when organizing your web site:
First - determine your audience (students, teachers, parents, self). Some sites are organized around information presumed needed by these groups. This is acceptable if information is also organized by subject. The problem with organizing information by presumed patron need is that it involves so much duplication and rarely can the needs of the individual be predicted by type. So, organize by subject, create by subject and link back to the type of patron page.

Second - Think of several main categories that you anticipate will cover the vast majority of the future links on your site.

Third - Organize your information to be easily found within 2-3 clicks from the homepage.

Why have a Library web page?

1. To give typical information--location, hours open, staff, resources, practices and procedures, rules, etc...

2. To direct students and staff to resources for research.

3. To provide helps for the successful completion of assignments (webquests, etc...) (selected web sites, etc...)

Library web sites should have the answers to the questions they deal with on a regular basis. FAQ's can include both frequently asked questions as well as information you want to be sure is communicated. Having forms to download and instructions on filling out the forms can be a wonderful time saver for both the Library and customer.
Be sure to display anything that makes the Library unique. Information about campus-wide projects, examples of student work, programs, links to homework assistance or research sites all can be included.

It is strongly encouraged that the person or persons responsible for the web site Email account develop a check and balance system with their principal or department head. An example of this would be-all replies to incoming Email be blind-carbon-copied (bcc) to the principal.

As much as is possible, you are encouraged to include the student's pictures and work. As we present ourselves to the world, we want to assure them that the students are our focus. To continue to protect the students' identity, photographs should focus on the event and not the students. Pictures taken from the student's side and back include them in the activity but do not expose the individual to any risks. Permission slips are required for identifiable individuals including faculty and staff.
