Characteristics of a Good Library Program
Information given to Principals during Horizontal Meetings in March, 2004

Home ] Up ]

After the M&A Technology Report was disseminated in January, I met with the superintendent, Dr. Katz. She suggested that I meet with the Principals to discuss what characteristics should make up a good Library program. Below are the items I presented to the Principals and the responses I received from them.

Presented:

1. Research studies over the last decade across 12 states have consistently shown that good Library Programs correlate significantly with high student achievement. School Library Media: Studies on Achievement

The characteristics that make up a good Library program are:

1. Leadership
2. Collaboration
3. Technology

Leadership translates into Librarians being on the campus leadership team to help solve academic challenges and that Librarians give staff development to the faculty.

2. 60% of the TEKS student expectations tested on the TAKS test can be directly supported through the Library program. ( I showed a series of web sites that demonstrated the tools Librarians had available to them to support the TEKS student expectations.) Collaboration translates into Librarians and teachers working together on the students mastering the TEKS student expectations tested on TAKS (thus cutting the student to teacher ratio in half).

To best use all the TEKS/TAKS Library Correlation resources use the links (and in parentheses, the Library Resources Page path) in the order below:

1. First evaluate your campus or classroom teacher TAKS Summary Report. Get the actual document from your principal. This link gives an example of the document:

http://www.tea.state.tx.us/student.assessment/reporting/results/summary/sum03/taks/g6.pdf

(LRP, TEKS Student Expectations Tested on TAKS, TAKS Summary Report-Test Performance, Grade 6 English-version English, Mathematics). Identify the TAKS Objective that you and the teacher want to improve.

2. Look at the TEKS student expectations tested on TAKS that Librarians think can be supported by the Library Program by opening up a new browser window and going to this link:

http://it.springbranchisd.com/sbisd_library/TAKS%20Read%20g06%20b.doc

which is for sixth grade Reading to continue the example from step 1. (LRP, TEKS Student Expectations Tested on TAKS, Reading under the Grade 6 column). Identify the specific TEKS student expectations in the right hand column that support the TAKS Objective to work on from step 1. The bolded ones are the ones that Librarians have agreed can best be supported by the Library Program.

3. Look for Library lessons that can support the selected TEKS student expectations by opening a new browser window to this link:

http://it.springbranchisd.com/sbisd_library/librarians/leadership_collaboration_technology/teks_taks/teks_taks_sixthgrade.htm

(LRP, TEKS/TAKS, Spring Branch version, Sixth Grade) Scroll down until you find the TEKS student expectation number in the left hand column and then use the resources listed particularly in the 3rd and 4th columns.

4. To incorporate Big6 and maybe integrate other disciplines consider opening in a new browser window to this link:

http://it.springbranchisd.com/sbisd_library/Research%20Grade%206.doc

(LRP, Research TEKS, 6th Grade). Scroll down to look for the TEKS student expectations number. You should find it with other disciplines' numbers in one or more parts of the Big6 model.

5. You might check the other two TEKS links in the near top left box containing TEKS links to see if you can find any other support resources for your particular TEKS student expectations numbers.

3. Integration of Technology into instruction occurs in the Library.

I demonstrated ABC-CLIO, State Geography, Clioview or World Geography, Clioview and other online resources from the Library Resources page. Technology translates into the Librarian seamlessly integrating information literacy or information access into each lesson using the vast resources available online.

Received: (at each presentation the principals nodded their heads in agreement)
Middle School Principals' Horizontal Meeting, March 2, 2004

no suggestions other that what was presented

High School Principals' Horizontal Meeting, March 9, 2004

1. train Librarians how better to utilize volunteers
2. Provide Library Aide training

Elementary Principals' Horizontal Meeting, March 23, 2004

1. Provide more lesson support (like what is found in the links from the TEKS box)
2. Librarians provide teachers with good lists of books to purchase for the classroom libraries
3. Work to find more vendors to provide books in Spanish

The Library Information Services Department will work on the items mentioned by the principals.
