I suppose Ridgecrest could call itself a success
story with AR. We now own over 6000 titles, a lot of them in Spanish. We have almost 100%
participation in the school in grades 1-5, plus even some Kindergartners who have started. Most
of our students are really excited about the program and literally shove each other away
from those computers. (We have three set up in the library where they can take tests)
We specially label the books with phosphorescent orange labels and reading level
written on outside of book to help them find the right books. We also isolate Level 1
books in a special area instead of keeping them with the general collection to make it
easier for the first graders and Kindergartners to find their books.
Drawbacks: It's a lot of work. We spend a lot of clerical time putting on labels and
writing levels. We have also had some software problems where the system goes for days and
weeks without working. We have had students' reading points disappear (we're still trying
to figure that one out), but overall, the benefits far outweigh the challenges.
