Details:
1. All Spring Branch Librarians meet together monthly. More issues are
K-12 than not so we meet all together. Occasionally we will break out into
grade level meetings to deal with specific issues or have a separate
meeting. But I feel it is important for all grade levels to know what is
going on in the other grade levels. We have been able to resolve some misunderstandings
and false assumptions by having all listen to all issues. We do not have vendors
attend our monthly meetings because we feel we have too much other items
to cover
2. The meetings are usually on the first Monday from 1:00 PM to 4:00
PM. We have found that we have better attendance and more real staff
development by having an afternoon meeting than by having an hour and a
half meeting. In other words, it is easier for the Librarians to get a way
after lunch than to try and leave at 2:30 when teachers are needing things
for the next day and wanting you to stay for just one more thing. By
having a 3 hour meeting we are actually able to do some serious staff development.
3. We try to always stat with Book Talks. Sometimes they are curriculum
based. Sometime they are thematic. Our most popular Book Talks seem to be
the more adult titles shared before summer vacation.
4. A committee of one Librarian from each grade level make up our
Leadership Committee. They are responsible for overseeing the planning of
the meetings. We meet each semester to plan the details of the next
semesters meetings. The 2 of the 3 committee members change each year. We
occasionally survey the Librarians to see if we are providing the training
and motivation they need.
5. We hold the meetings in the campus Libraries. Often times the
visiting Librarians see ideas of displays etc. while at the host Library.
Librarians volunteer to provide food and decorations for each meeting. It
takes at least 3 Librarians to share this responsibility. The amount of
food seems to increase each year.
