for the Spring Branch School Libraries

Purpose

Spring Branch School Libraries exist for 3 reasons:

1) to help students learn to access, evaluate, and use (create and communicate) information independently;

2) to help students develop the love of reading;

3) to support teachers in leading students to be life-long learners.

Goals

1) Every Library will be a welcoming and inviting place and the Librarian will be a friendly and helpful person.

2) Every Librarian will collaborate with teachers to teach the TEKS tested on the TAKS test that could best be taught in the Library.

3) Every campus Library program shall include some form of reading motivation activity.

4) Every lesson taught by the Librarian shall include some technology.

ULTIMATELY

A Library is not about books or computers

A Library is:

1. Organized access to quality information for the successful: a) solving of problems; b) conducting of research; c) satisfying of curiosities; d) and the continuing of conversations.

2. An accumulation of tools that enthuse students to create and communicate information.

3. A magical environment that inspires students to love to read.

4. A Librarian--master teacher who can facilitate all the above.

Line in the Sand

1. Librarians are information specialists (not just book specialists) Being a book specialist is a subset of being an information specialist. Being an online subscription databases specialist is a subset of being an information specialist. Being a web 2.0 specialist is also a subset of being an information specialist.

2. Librarians do not have a curriculum. As master teachers, a Librarian's job is to collaborate with the classroom teachers to help them cover their classroom curriculum with also infusing technology, information literacy, research, and web 2.0 into co-teaching.

3. Librarians must be aware of where students are and tailor materials and instructional strategies to meet the needs of the students.

4. Using all the above knowledge, Librarians must foster the love of reading among all their patrons (students and staff).

A Truth

Convenience Trumps Quality

Librarian's job is to make access to quality materials and tools convenient!
