Selection Practices

To select well, a Librarian must know the 3 "C"s. 1) Curriculum, 2) Collection (existing); 3) Community
Spring Branch ISD Board Policy (EFA Legal)
Spring Branch ISD Board Policy (EFA Local)
Spring Branch ISD Board Policy (EFA Exhibit) (reconsideration forms)
Board Approved vendors from which ALL books should be purchased processed.
Library Funds do not purchase classroom sets. The vast majority of the time one or two copies of any one title are adequate. When purchasing books from TLA lists (e.g. Bluebonnet) consider buying one Library binding copy and up to 4 other copies in paperback or soft-back binding.
A major component of SBISD Librarians' selection procedure is to review books for and spend time evaluating books at the Annual Book Exhibit. At the Book Exhibit Librarians, teachers, students, and community members have an opportunity to conduct hands-on evaluation of nearly 3,000 books and be able to peruse the catalog created from Librarians' written reviews of the books.
Consider recommended reviews from these magazines: (list forthcoming)
Books should be purchased to support the TEKS student expectations tested on the TAKS and personal reading that will lead students to love to read.
Books should be purchased in correlation to the Weeding schedule.
